Everything I find magical about minature photography and special effects is all packed into this video. I love it!

The Ice Book (HD) from Davy and Kristin McGuire on Vimeo.

I always had the dream of creating a theatre performance that opened up like a pop-up book. A show that would mix video projections with live actors to create a totally immersive experience. We wanted to create a full scale, life-size theatre production.

The idea for the Icebook was to create a miniature maquette for this dream – a demonstration model to show to producers and other funders in the hope that they would give us some money to make the full scale show. (And we still hope that this will come true one day!) The Icebook has since however, grown its own legs and turned into a miniature show all by itself. An intimate performance for small audiences.

We love the old pre-cinematic optical illusions, such as zeotropes and magic lanterns, and the magical way in which they can mesmerise audiences through basic mechanics. Rather than simply projecting images onto a screen, we wanted to create an object with a life of its own – a tangible and magical “thing” for an audience to experience.

When Kristin first held a pop-up in front of a lamp we were fascinated by the utterly beautiful effect of the light coming through the paper, creating shadows and silhouettes which we could then enhance and complement with back projected film-footage. In the Icebook, the 3D effect is achieved by back projecting onto the pop ups. Using this technique the projected characters appear as if they are moving behind the cut-outs and thus the illusion of perspective is created.

Aesthetically, we were also inspired by early 20th century Russian fairytales as well as the work of Jan Svankmajer, Flatworld, the Judder Man from the Metz advert, Georges Méliès and the genre of German expressionism.

So we applied for an Artist Residency at The Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen in Germany, which gave us four months, a small amount of money and a large room to work in.

My wife Kristin bought an instruction book on how to make pop-ups, and we set about cutting and folding and trying things out. It was quite a steep learning curve…

While Kristin worked on the pop-ups, I created the projections in After Effects. Most of the scenes in the Icebook consist of us (as actors) standing in vast landscapes and huge buildings. We didn’t have a big studio or the budget for proper film sets, so the background scenery is entirely made up of various photographs that were cut and pasted together and then animated in the 3D space of After Effects.

Compositing - The Ice Book from Davy and Kristin McGuire on Vimeo.

The actors (we only had ourselves) were superimposed onto this photomontage using a makeshift green screen cobbled together from some cheap fabric. We also used builders lights to illuminate our subjects because the light in the room we were using was so dim.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 500px; height: 250px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfNWmx0xXuDoliDTSaaiUP6YUSV7LGISgtC5sIHq2AEAZESqU5igzvhx3lmKds4tbW2DMm-XUFp-CS3MJkFEfkhTRUVgXkNCl9q7VdGk4L_BFa46vEAsOkFkQF1PNfhL6OXKFO6pAAZgzN/s400/boatbeforeafter-670x376.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593241225074017330" />

Almost everything was shot on a Canon 5D Mark ii because of its super duper image quality. The extra stops that the 5D provided was a massive help in our badly lit studio. The problem however, was that all of the footage and all of the photos I took were actually too sharp and crisp, so I had to dirty everything up.

At the time, the 5D would only shoot at 30 fps. The motion was over smooth for the aesthetic we were after. I added a posterize time effect to simulate a 15fps feel. I then added lots of dust and grain to give the footage an aged film look.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 600px; height: 325px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlSftgo5Y8FXu7KUDD2wEauUlGXHNJ_wVnMe_QdOF8S6QbHuuttbaiz7IB_tTUTmlR7A__7mikLqB4RWKyQm3py-vEBB5fhi3RoSxjnR5tRhO-otk4K266cXAna5h1QS4a9lWCu5zLfUKM/s400/box-670x445.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593241684688538882" />

The engineering of the book needed massive thought, too. We decided early on to use back projections, but we needed a way to stop the light spill from the projector bleeding into the room. Kristin ingeniously bought a cardboard wardrobe from the internet and cut a “proscenium” hole out of the lid. Each page of the pop up book is also held up by a system of magnets and the book is bound in a very specific way to allow for the projections to shine through.

The Icebook is available for screening at Film, Theatre and Arts Festivals. They post fliers around the break rooms displaying their "wares". A gun cabinet was up for grabs today. Looks to be oak, holds 7 firearms, built in light and a creepy spirit of a dead guy...or Jesus. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 309px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxACF_2p1-68TXzJEVD6_FCDROWpeQmB05oYH6OYJIzaTTxtGxdZXTB0QHP3en51UFBdOzDA8tx1b9B8vA56hTt4IQKz7wf4hUqrzLx9LH6dFaWm02YIYzN4aH19DIkVRQBQ5IKpk47kRt/s400/Ghost.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5590013623371300930" />
Click on the picture to enlarge.

So myself and a few amateur ghost hunters questioned the seller of this curiosity cabinet. She was stunned herself so she called her husband at home.

"We found Jesus in the photo of your gun cabinet. It looks like the ghost of Jesus is inside a bag next to the cabinet!"

Husband replied, "That would be the picture of Jesus we bought in Vegas".

Oh well.The Grey Pawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06079574267267182295noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3198528485364076876.post-40675453875480451002010-11-01T12:56:00.000-07:002010-11-01T13:15:41.213-07:00IllumationCheck out the happenings at my other blog, Illumation. What a plain and ordinary name. I know many Matts. This guy is different though, this Matt draws funny pictures, and how!

Matthew Olin was visiting my studio (garage) one day and he had brought with him some funny drawings. We had made live action films together in the past and discovered that indie filmmakers face many, many challenges. One problem that faces live action film is the constant race to stay on top of technology. Cameras are constantly coming out with better features and bigger price tags, and even though the story you are telling should shine through the technology you are using, you can never be completely satisfied dedicating your prized film to a medium that will be outdated next year. There are many more factors, however, that inhibit the process. These factors are locations you can't control, expensive lighting and sound equipment, costumes, props, food to feed all the people who have graciously agreed to work for free, and actors. I have worked with great actors in the past but they are a rare creature indeed. They generally have large egos and limited talent. Nothing like starting a feature film, shooting three quarters of the film only to have the main character drop out to pursue a music career. Its not like you can have them sign a contract right!?

The flip side to this conundrum, animation. The beauty of animated films is Matt can draw 75% of the film and our production value is not limited by locations, costumes, props, actors, etc. Our imaginations roam free.

This took three hours to make:

So what was that? It doesn't make sense right? Right, it doesn't. We were about to have a meeting with a guy (Brad) who wanted to produce a children's educational show. In order to show him what that show might look like aesthetically. We made this the night before.

So in our studio, we sat down at two computers. Matt drew some characters and backgrounds (via photoshop) and I pieced them together and gave them some movement (via Motion and Final Cut). All over some nice Belgian beers and a pizza. Nothing heavy to unload or setup. No cranky actors. No retakes. I have really enjoyed the process of using photoshop to create elements that can later come to life. There are many many possibilities here. It is, as some would say "grotesque". This might be true however I believe it holds a message for the audience, which is more than Hollywood can produce these days. It was written by a fellow in England named Stanley Donwood (slowydownward.com). He does the artwork for a small band named, Radiohead. I don't think he knows about this film yet, but he will be getting a copy when it is finished so let us hope he enjoys it right? Oh well, it is a vain attempt at meeting the man, since he is "underground", and "mysterious" and "English". I am very excited about this project and want to thank all those who are helping me in this endeavour. We may be arrested...

Below is a video my brother Ben shot of all the behind the scenes from that day. It was a crazy four hour shoot. Those four hours were all I was allotted so I was very excited about all the ground we were able to cover in such a short time. I will submit my reason for the dark footage; it is dark because you don't light behind the scenes footage. Perfectly exceptable reason.

This film is an adaptation of a story from Stanley Donwoods website. You can read it here

To date we have all but a scene or two to shoot still. If you read the short story the few scenes are the "collecting the salts" scenes. Fragile stuff to film so I am treading lightly.The Grey Pawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06079574267267182295noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3198528485364076876.post-28103563178991002832007-10-02T18:58:00.001-07:002007-10-02T19:56:34.861-07:00Art is just another way of keeping a diary ~ Pablo PicassoI created this blog in an attempt to display all the creative endeavours I experiment with. I am hoping that it will also be a useful tool in collecting my ideas and inspirations, an open journal that others might explore and discover all the odd bits that spark my imagination. I enjoy meeting interesting people so I encourage you to drop a hello and let me know what inspires you.The Grey Pawnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06079574267267182295noreply@blogger.com0
